Growing support for the Biomass Petition
British companies and individuals are being encouraged to show their support for the Biomass Petition, a campaign to force the government to reduce or scrap the subsidy it pays power generating companies to burn virgin wood as an acceptable Biomass fuel.
Everyone who pays for energy is paying a tax called Climate Change Levy. The government is giving part of this money to the power industry as a subsidy to use Biomass as a fuel instead of traditional non-renewable resources. However, instead of burning waste, the power industry is buying up tranches of forest and burning virgin wood. Aside from the environmental effect, wood prices have also risen sharply, and prices of all furniture (not just office furniture) has been directly affected. The issue will in the longer term put real manufacturing jobs at risk.
Log on to www.biomass-petition.org to show your support; if the petition reaches 100,000 signatures the government’s own rules say that the matter has to be debated in parliament.
